Situated in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park within walking distance of the London 2012 Olympics sports venues, the Athletes Village was originally designed to accommodate athletes for the duration of the Games.

Cousins were chosen for this project by the client as one of the top decorating firms in UK delivering large scale projects on time and to a high quality.

In legacy mode the park is now known as East Village and is a major mixed-use development which, along with residential accommodation provides shops, restaurants, medical, media and leisure facilities. Since conclusion of the 2012 Olympic Games, East Village has delivered a lasting legacy of new housing in a regeneration area. Cousins were involved in detail design and construction on three of the mid-rise residential blocks and subsequently assisted Lend Lease in the handover of the overall scheme to the new owners Delancey.

Project tasks and challenges

Taking on the project was a challenging prospect, with tight programme dates and no room for movement on completion dates; the Olympic athletes had to be accommodated without fail.

The job was separated in two phases. Phase one was the build to accommodate the athletes and their staff. Apartments were built into separate single or double rooms, with no kitchens, and were painted up to final coats.

The second phase commenced after Olympics were over. Sisk converted accommodation rooms to apartments, and some of the walls has been removed to create kitchen space. After touching up to localised damage, final coats were applied, and the apartments were transformed into high quality living space.

Project results

The project was delivered on time and within the budget. Cousins were proud to have made a contributing to the success of the London Olympics.
