Home of Hercules Wimbledon Athletic team, the stadium grandstand suffered catastrophic fire damage in October 2016.
As an important resource for the community in Wimbledon, and for the local Merton council, Cousins were chosen to undertake the refurbishment.
After suffering fire damage, the first task was to strip out all old materials from all areas inside the stadium, as well as preparing all roofing steel and metal staircases for repainting.
Working closely with Building Control, we saved all the structural features we could, including refurbishing the commentator’s office in the grandstand.
The changing rooms have been refitted and there is new wiring throughout. The main room in the middle of the grandstand was stripped back to the brickwork and rebuilt so it now has new walls, ceilings and flooring.
The client, the London Borough of Merton was very happy with the outcome of the work, and the stadium re-opened for sporting use less than a year after the fire.
